The
Oregon Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct
the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of Oregon’s program is to
implement effective HIV prevention education programs in all Oregon school
districts.
Oregon's Program In Action
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Implementing regional workshops on preventing HIV, STDs, and
unintended pregnancy to showcase effective, research-based curricula;
providing information and skill-building opportunities on elements of
effective prevention education; and promoting the adoption of effective
classroom strategies by school districts to address HIV prevention.
- Convening a working group to continue implementing the HIV
Prevention for Incarcerated Youth strategic plan, which includes
training for Oregon Youth Authority staff on culturally specific HIV/STD
prevention education.
- Providing technical assistance to teachers, principals, and
superintendents on the State Board of Education’s HIV Prevention, Human
Sexuality Education Policy.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Collaborating with the Department of Health Services to administer
the YRBS.
- Implementing a workshop for school administrators and School Board
Association members to share the YRBS data and provide strategies and
tools for using the data to inform decision making.
