Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Michael Posner departs July 31st for meetings in Sudan and South Sudan. In Khartoum and Juba, Assistant Secretary Posner will meet with leaders to emphasize the need to develop institutions that govern justly, respond to the needs of their people, respect human rights, and build a more open and inclusive society.

The United States has been deeply engaged in Sudan, having helped to broker the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended decades of civil war between the country’s north and south and supports international efforts to promote full and timely implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement. In the years ahead, the United States will remain a steadfast partner of the Sudanese and South Sudanese people.
