The United States strongly condemns the July 19 assassination attempt on Guinean President Alpha Conde. Inaugurated in December 2010 as Guinea’s first democratically elected president since independence in 1958, Conde and his government have been working to establish the foundations of democratic institutions and practice.

The Guinean people fought long and hard for the right to choose their leader and have a representative government. Overthrowing a democratic government through force is unacceptable. These violent acts undermine democracy and the rule of law and threaten the stability of the region.

The United States calls on the people of Guinea to remain committed to the principles of democracy and to express disagreements through peaceful means.
