The U.S. Department of State’s Coordinator for the Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) Dawn L. McCall is on travel to Kyiv and Crimea, Ukraine and Moscow, Russia from September 28-October 5 for consultations and to co-chair a meeting of the U.S.-Russia Bilateral Presidential Commission (BPC) Media Subgroup.
In Crimea, Coordinator McCall will open a Windows on America Center in Kerch. The Center, a partnership between the U.S. Government and the region’s public library, will provide up-to-date information on the United States and augment the library’s English-language collections. Coordinator McCall will also meet with Crimea’s Minister of Culture and open a jazz concert. In Kyiv, she will meet with Embassy staff, tour a new American Center, and visit a Library Electronic Access Project (LEAP) for blind students.
During her visit to Moscow, Coordinator McCall and Mikhail Gusman, First Deputy Director General of official Russian news agency ITAR-TASS, will host the second meeting of the BPC Media Subgroup. Coordinator McCall will bring with her a delegation of 11 media leaders representing such institutions as the San Francisco Chronicle, Yahoo!News, the Newspaper Association of America, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the International Center for Journalists, as well as leaders of several U.S. schools of journalism. The meeting will hold sessions on: The Business of Media, The Evolving Practice and Profession of Journalism, New Media Technologies, and Ethics in Journalism. An agreement for an exchange of 24 young journalists from each country in 2012 and 2013, funded and administered by the Knight Foundation, the International Center for Journalists and the Union of Journalists of Moscow will be signed during the meeting.
