Paul Findley Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse

The three-story Paul Findley Federal Building, constructed in 1930, is clad in gray limestone with decorative terra-cotta crests, combining Federalist, Neoclassical, and Art Deco styles of architecture. It is named after the former U.S. Representative from Illinois who served from 1961 to 1982.
The district courtroom is one of the most significant interior spaces remaining in the building, with classical styling in its wood door frames, walnut paneling, and a decorative plaster ceiling. Currently used as both a federal courthouse and an office facility, the Findley building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Recovery Act & Other Projects The Recovery Act funded a project to improve the building's energy efficiency. The $52,000 project was awarded to Artisan Construction in December 2009 and was completed in February 2010. Energy-saving "green” elements of the project included modifying the energy management system, upgrading light fixtures to decrease electricity usage, and installing a new water heater to cut energy costs.
Public Hours and Access The building is open to the public Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (except federal holidays). All visitors must undergo security screening and present a valid identity card (such as a state driver's license or federal ID) before gaining access to the building.

Key Tenants The building houses offices for the Department of Homeland Security, Social Security Administration, U.S. Attorneys, U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
