The Great Lakes Region's newest U.S. Courthouse was officially opened and dedicated on Oct. 29, 2011, in the central business district of Rockford, Illinois. The Stanley J. Roszkowski U.S. Courthouse was officially named by an act of Congress on April 23, 2009.

Covering 211,414 gross square feet on 5.5 acres, the Roszkowski Courthouse contains five courtrooms and offices for the U.S. Courts and other court-related agencies. The courthouse also provides 55 secured indoor parking spaces and 20 outdoor spaces.

Public Hours and Access The building is open to the public Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (except federal holidays). All visitors must undergo security screening and present a valid identity card (such as a state driver's license or federal ID) before gaining access to the building. The main east entrance is handicapped accessible.

Parking and Public Transportation Two-hour parking is available in metered spaces near the building, while a nearby public parking garage offers spaces for $5-10 per day. No visitor parking is available on the federal property.

The Rockford Mass Transit District (RMTD) Transfer Center station at 501 W. State, the main hub for all RMTD routes, is four blocks from the courthouse.

Green Elements The courthouse construction project aims to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver Certification. Some of the credits that may be earned fall under the LEED® Materials credit category since many of the construction materials were made from recycled content obtained and manufactured in the regional area.

Art in Architecture Program Tony Feher, an American sculptor who was granted the Art in Architecture award for the Roszkowski Courthouse project, is noted for using everyday objects in a manner that gives them and the spaces they occupy new identity. The Roszkowski's untitled Art in Architecture composition will be a forest consisting of 104 crab apple trees planted on an orchard-like grid, visually aligned to complement the architecture of the courthouse. For more information visit GSA's Art in Architecture page.
