Un virus causa esta enfermedad. El tratamiento con antibióticos no cura la enfermedad viral (los antibióticos son eficaces para tratar las infecciones bacterianas). De hecho, si se administran antibióticos cuando no se necesitan, puede resultar perjudicial al aumentar el riesgo de una infección resistente.
Este niño podrá volver a la guardería cuando se le haya ido la fiebre. En ese momento la mayoría de niños pueden participar en actividades y no exigen tanta atención que la salud y seguridad de los demás niños podría peligrar. La exclusión de niños con enfermedades virales no reduce la propagación de la infección a otros niños porque los virus normalmente se propagan incluso antes de que aparezcan síntomas de la enfermedad.
