The U.S. Attorney's Office of theWestern District of Missouri is involved in a number of programs and projects in our community. Some of our major efforts are listed below.
Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee
The Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee sponsors and co-sponsors training seminars for federal, state and local law enforcement agencies addressing a variety of subjects.
Project Safe Childhood (PSC) is a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 that aims to combat the proliferation of technology-facilitated sexual exploitation crimes against children. The threat of sexual predators soliciting children for physical sexual contact is well-known and serious; the danger of perpetrators who produce, distribute, and possess child pornography is equally dramatic and disturbing.
Project Ceasefire, the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative in the Kansas City and Springfield, Mo., areas, is recognized nationally as being not only one of the first anti-gun violence programs, but one of the most successful. A milestone was passed in June 2007, when the U.S. Attorney announced that 1,000 defendants had been convicted of illegally possessing firearms under Project Ceasefire.
Human Trafficking Rescue Project
The Human Trafficking Rescue Project (HTRP) is comprised of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies as well as non-government organizations that provide necessary services for victims of human trafficking. The HTRP has become one of the most successful human trafficking task forces in the country.
Victims of crime may experience feelings of confusion, frustration, fear and anger. The United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri and the Victim/Witness Unit is dedicated to making sure that victims of federal crimes and their family members are treated with compassion, fairness and respect.
The Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) is comprised of dozens of highly trained, locally based, passionately committed investigators, analysts, linguists, hostage rescue experts, and other specialists from more than 30 law enforcement and intelligence agencies.
