Typhoon 16W (Bolaven), # 18: Korea in the crosshairs

7:20 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Korea time: Already, southern coastal areas of South Korea are being affected by the most outer bands of humongous Typhoon Bolaven, which is slowly making its away away from Okinawa and headed toward the Yellow Sea (or West Sea) with the west coast in its crosshairs.

Yongsan Garrison officials warn that U.S. bases could see southerly winds gusting from 58 to 69 mph Monday evening into Tuesday, with 12 inches of rain forecast.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center’s latest advisory has Bolaven tracking 70 miles west of Kunsan Air Base at high noon Tuesday, 85 miles west of Osan Air Base at 4 p.m. and 81 miles west of Yongsan around 6 p.m.

Stay tuned to your commanders’ access channels, official websites and Facebook and Twitter pages for information, especially when Tropical Cyclone Conditions of Readiness are set.

Bolaven’s back-side rain and wind bands continue to lash Okinawa with winds exceeding 58 mph. The island remained in TCCOR 1-E into Monday morning.

About the Author

Dave Ornauer has been with Stars and Stripes since March 5, 1981. One of his first assignments as a beat reporter in the old Japan News Bureau was “typhoon chaser,” a task which he resumed virtually full time since 2004, the year after his job, as a sports writer-photographer, moved to Okinawa and Ornauer with it.

As a typhoon reporter, Ornauer pores over Web sites managed by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center as well as U.S. government, military and local weather outlets for timely, topical information. Pacific Storm Tracker is designed to take the technical lingo published on those sites and simplify it for the average Stripes reader.
