United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission - Protecting People and the Environment

New Jersey

NRC's Regional Office in King of Prussia (Region I) is responsible for carrying out the agency's duties in New Jersey. No nuclear fuel cycle facilities are located in New Jersey.

On September 30, 2009, New Jersey became an Agreement State and assumed responsibility for Part 40 licenses within its borders, and also has jurisdiction over x-ray equipment, naturally occurring radioactive materials, and certain radioactive materials that are not produced in a reactor. However, the NRC retains regulatory authority over the Stepan Company facility (a complex materials site undergoing decommissioning) because New Jersey opted not to assume regulatory authority over a certain type of byproduct material, known as 11.e.(2) material.

More information about New Jersey's role in ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials can be obtained from the NRC Office of State Program's Directory of State Regulations, Legislation, and Web Sites.
