How to Become an Authorized Trainer

To become an authorized Disaster Site trainer, you must meet the following prerequisites:

  1. Be a current authorized OSHA Construction or General Industry Outreach Trainer.

  2. Have a minimum of three years experience as an occupational safety and health trainer.

  3. Have completed a 40-hour (minimum) HAZWOPER training course, or possess journey level credentials in the construction trades, or possess the technical skills or credentials in construction work equivalent to the journey level.

Obtain guidance on whether you meet these prerequisites from the OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Center where you want to take the training.

If you have fulfilled the prerequisites, you must complete OSHA course #5600, Disaster Site Worker Train-the-Trainer Course. Students are given the opportunity to practice knowledge, skills, and attitudes through discussion, planned exercises, demonstrations and presentations. Persons successfully completing this course will receive an "Authorized Disaster Site Trainer Card".

OSHA Training Institute (OTI) Education Centers conduct this training. Each OSHA Education Center posts their course offerings, schedules, and locations on their individual websites.

Disaster Site outreach trainers are authorized for four years. Before the expiration of their authorization status, authorized trainers must take OSHA course #5602, Update for Disaster Site Worker Trainer Course, to renew their authorization for another four years. If your card expires, you will have to retake Course #5600 to become reauthorized as a trainer.

Authorized trainers may receive OSHA course completion cards for their students.
