About the Guidelines

EPA is seeking public comments as it develops voluntary guidelines to help states, tribes, and territories create and implement environmental health programs for K-12 schools.  These guidelines are mandated by the federal Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007.  In carrying out this statutory mandate, EPA consulted with the Department of Education and Department of Health and Human Services, as well as other EPA school environmental health programs, to develop these voluntary State K-12 School Environmental Health Program Guidelines.  The goal of the guidelines is to provide a comprehensive framework for improving the health and well-being of students by creating and sustaining healthy, safe, and productive school environments.
