To date in FY 2012, USAID/OFDA has responded to two flooding disasters in Fiji—heavy rains beginning on January 22, 2012, as well as additional rains that led to flooding in late March 2012. Both incidents particularly affected western areas of Viti Levu, the country’s main island. The floods also damaged water and electricity infrastructure and impacted roads and bridges, limiting access to affected communities. In response to each event, USAID/OFDA supported the distribution of emergency relief supplies, including blankets, hygiene kits, and water purification tablets, to the most affected individuals through the Fiji Red Cross Society.
