WATERS Web, Mapping, and Database Services

These WATERS services provide application friendly interfaces to complex analyses. These services make extensive use of the NHD and indexed program data in the RAD, and also integrate other WATERS program data in selected services. Designed as modular units, the services have been developed within a common architecture.

You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view some of the files on this page. See EPA's PDF page to learn more about PDF, and for a link to the free Acrobat Reader.

Web Services

These http based services use the SOAP protocol to transfer XML messages. The interface to the services offered is documented by a XML Web Services Decription Language (WSDL) document. A general description of the web service is provided along with links to documention, the web service end point, and the WSDL document.

Web Service Name and Description Web Service End Point and WSDL Links
Spatial Services Provides spatial services for the WATERS Reach Address Database (RAD). The RAD currently contains the results of spatial indexing of Office of Water entities (discharge facilities, impaired waters, assessed waters, etc.) against the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). NHD, which is jointly maintained by EPA and USGS, is a digital (computerized) collection of points, lines and polygons that represent surface water features, such as streams, lakes and swamps. Simply put, the NHD can be thought of as 'the blue lines on a map'. The Spatial Services Document, in Adobe PDF format, provides detailed documentation on the operations and data provided by this service. Service End Point

Mapping Services

The RAD mapping services provide access to NHD\RAD feature databases via ArcIMS image/feature services and WMS/WFS (thru wmsconector). Users can connect to RAD feature layers using many available client applications such as ArcGIS. Developers can utilize these services to incorporate NHD\RAD feature layers into their own mapping applications.

Map Service Name and Description Map Service End Point
ArcIMS Services Provides ArcIMS Image/Feature services of NHD/RAD feature layers. For more information please visit the RAD Web Mapping Services Factsheet or the RAD Web Mapping Services Help and FAQs Mapping Service End Point
http://geodata.epa.gov
WMS/WFS Services Provide OGC WMS/WFS Image and Feature services of NHD/RAD feature layers. For more information please visit the RAD Web Mapping Services Factsheet or the RAD Web Mapping Services Help and FAQs Mapping Service End Point

Each WMS/WFS has its own service endpoint use the service name provided in the RAD Web Mapping Services Factsheet to generate the end point URL. EX:

/com.esri.wms.Esrimap/RADBasicImage?request=getcapabilities&service=WMS&version=1.1.1&

Database Services

The database services provide easy access to RAD event data that is indexed to the NHD. Users can utilize these services to request information for specific locations. RAD event feature layers can be downloaded for limited areas.

Database Service Name and Description Database Service End Point
Water Program Identify Returns program information that has been loaded into the RAD event tables for a location on the NHD stream network. It returns the set program system entities that have been indexed to the input reach and measure location. For more information please visit the Water Program Identify Technical Reference Requires EPA TSMSS access and password
RADDownload Returns a subset of the RAD and program event system(s) in shapefile format for a specific geographic area. RAD Download Application
Upstream/DownstreamProvides stream network traversal functions. Future
Total Waters Provides counts / sums of surface water information, both from the NHD and from the Program systems. For more information please visit the Total Waters Technical Reference Requires EPA TSMSS access and password
