Towns Saluted as Champion of Health Innovation

WASHINGTON, DC:  On Wednesday, October 5, 2011, Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns was recognized as a “Champion of Healthcare Innovation” by the Healthcare Leadership Council during its annual Healthcare Innovations Expo in the Canon Caucus Room.  Rep. Towns received the Council’s third annual award presented to lawmakers for ongoing support of patient-centered medical progress.

As a member of the Subcommittee on Health in the Energy and Commerce Committee, Rep. Towns has been at the forefront of many health issues.  Rep. Towns introduced H.R. 2159, the Prostate Act, in the 112th Congress that will create an inter-agency taskforce that will share best practices in prostate cancer research, outreach and education efforts to ensure effective and efficient use of federal dollars for prostate cancer.

Rep. Towns also co-sponsored the bi-partisan Combating Autism Reauthorization Act that was signed into law on September 30.  The bill amends the Public Health Service Act to extend and reauthorize through FY2014: (1) the surveillance and research program for autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities; (2) the education, early detection, and intervention program for autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities; and (3) the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee.

Rep. Towns continues to work with colleagues in the House of Representatives to oppose cuts to Medicare and Medicaid and to defend the Affordable Care Act from those who seek its repeal.  The Healthcare Leadership Council (HLC) is a coalition of healthcare chief executives and serves as the exclusive forum to jointly develop policies, plans, and programs.
