BEACON, NY-- Trekking up the 1600 feet of rugged, unforgiving terrain of Mount Beacon, "citizen Soldiers" assigned to the New York Army National Guard's 1156th Engineer Company spent two weeks sharpening their skills as well as learning new ones refurbishing the fire observation tower located at its summit. "The project request started out as a complete overhaul for the tower to include painting, adjusting handrail heights, adding fencing, and rebuilding the cabin atop the tower," said Cpt. Daniel L. Colomb, commander of the 1156th Engineer Company. "We are basically trying to make it safer," said Spc. Osse Jean-Pierre, a carpenter assigned to the 1156th who also performs part-time general maintenance in his civilian job. "We replaced some rails, changed all the top panels, and painted it so it won't rust."

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District (Corps) signed a $3 million cost-share agreement today to develop a watershed plan to support the West Maui "Ridge to Reef" Initiative. Fort Leonard Wood officials anticipate a November ribbon cutting for delivery of up to 20 homes to replace those destroyed in the EF-3 tornado that struck the installation New Year's Eve day 2010. This will represent the first phase of a multiphased project which is expected to be completed by May 2013. At the end of the project, a total of 160 new duplex homes are scheduled to be constructed. One of the significant features of the new homes is that each unit will have a tornado safe room.

The U.S. Army has set the goal of Net-Zero energy consumption by 2030. For an installation to be Net-Zero it must produce as much energy on site as it consumes. This includes thermal and electrical energy. Installations can still be connected to the civilian grid, but over the course of the year the energy pulled from the grid must equal the amount supplied to it. A simple example would be if the hydro dam produced three megawatts of electricity 24 hours a day and the post used six MW for 12 hours a day and zero for the other 12 hours. Given this case, the installation would be Net-Zero because even though it still pulls three MW from the grid during the operating day, it supplies three MW back to the utility at night.
