    JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. - On Sept. 1, the 2011 Operation Rising Star kicked off its annual singing contest with auditions at the Cascade Community Center here. It was open to all military branches, including family members. The contest is hosted by 37 installations, each claiming a winner. The winner gets 500 dollars, second place gets 250, and third place gets $100. The playing field is then narrowed down to 12 finalists, who will compete against each other in San Antonio. Only one talented singer can be crowned the 2011 Rising Star.

    A video crew was at Joint Base Lewis-McChord to shoot the final footage segments for an Army-sponsored reality show called "Starting Strong," a project headed by television actor and producer Ricky Schroder. In each episode potential recruits are matched with a senior noncommissioned officer, who serves as a mentor, and two battle buddies. They then get to experience a few days-in-the-lives of those Soldiers. Toward the end of each episode, the civilian "prospect" also meets an Army veteran who now uses skills gained as a Soldier in a successful civilian career. The prospect then must make a decision whether to enlist or not.

He fought through the three-day tournament and didn't let his re-injured right hand " his power hand " prevent him from repeating his success. Jackson defeated Minnesota National Guard's Braden Simont by a technical knockout in the final match of the tournament on July 23 to claim his second consecutive heavyweight title.

But for the 15 Soldiers of the 571st Military Police Company, being sprayed is just another part of training and a skill that could save their lives. The group to be sprayed by Oleoresin Capsicum, commonly known as Pepper Spray, consisted of two officers, ten enlisted and three cadets all who needed to be certified on the training at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, July 29. But the training lane was not just about being sprayed with the OC spray; they also had to complete five stations relevant to their role as a military police officer.

  • Army’s largest command cases colors for move to Fort Bragg, N.C.

    U.S. Army Forces Command, a command responsible for more than 800,000 Soldiers nationwide, cased its colors today in advance of its permanent relocation to Fort Bragg, N.C. Gen. James D. Thurman, FORSCOM commanding general, led the casing ceremony and was assisted in rolling the command’s colors by Command Sgt. Maj. Ronald T. Riling, the FORSCOM command sergeant major. Headquartered at Fort McPherson, Ga., since 1973, FORSCOM was directed to relocate under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure legislation. Other Fort McPherson units, such as U.S. Army Reserve Command and U.S. Army Central (Third Army), were also directed to relocate. Fort McPherson is to close by Sept. 15.

This game transforms traditional Army ethics education into an interactive experience capitalizing on the popularity and success of “America's Army.” Breaking away from traditional, case-study based instruction, the Center for the Army Profession and Ethic (CAPE) adds a series of challenging ethical scenarios to the game’s maps, missions, and objectives.
