Compliance Assistance


Through the Alliance, OSHA and CCAR will provide CCAR affiliates and others in the automotive industry, including but not limited to youth and Spanish-speaking workers, with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees’ health and safety, particularly by focusing on electrical safety and on reducing and preventing exposure to hexavalent chromium, asbestos and automotive lifts hazards. The Alliance's goals include:

Outreach and communication:

  • Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of workplace hazards, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA’s and CCAR’s Web sites) to employers and employees in the industry.
  • Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA’s or CCAR’s conferences, local meetings, or other events such as the International Autobody Congress and Exposition (NACE), the International Midas Dealers Association (IMDA), the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), the Motorist Assurance Program (MAP), the Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR), and the Western Regional Pollution Prevention Network.
  • Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding CCAR’s best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by CCAR and through OSHA- or CCAR-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum).
  • Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.

Promoting the national dialogue on workplace safety and health:

  • Convene or participate in forums, round table discussions, or stakeholder meetings to help forge innovative solutions in the workplace or to provide input on safety and health issues.

  • May 6-12, 2012: 2012 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair and a number of other Alliance Program participants support 2012 NAOSH Week. Sponsored annually by ASSE and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. 2012 Theme: “Safety, What Every Business Needs.”
  • May 1-7, 2011: 2011 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair and a number of other Alliance Program participants are supporting 2011 NAOSH Week. Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers, an Alliance Program participant, and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace. The theme for 2011 is "Celebrating a Century of Safety."
  • May 2-8, 2010: 2010 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week. The Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported 2010 NAOSH Week, "Mission NAOSH 2010: Safe Workplaces." Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
  •  April 24-26, 2010: American Truck Dealers National Convention, Orlando, Florida.
    • Robert Stewart, Executive Vice Prescient, CCAR, staffed an exhibit booth and distributed copies of the Agency's Alliance Program and compliance assistance resources, including a booklet focusing on single- and multi-piece rim wheels, to conference attendees.
  • April 6-7, 2010: National Automotive Technology Competition, New York City, New York.
    • Robert Stewart, Executive Vice Prescient, CCAR, staffed an exhibit booth and distributed copies of the Agency's Alliance Program and compliance assistance resources, including a booklet focusing on single- and multi-piece rim wheels, to conference attendees.
  • February 13-15, 2010: National Automobile Dealers Association Conference and Exposition, Orlando, Florida

  • October 19-25, 2009: 2009 Drug-Free Work Week. CCAR and a number of other Alliance Program participants supported the 2009 Drug-Free Work Week. Sponsored annually by the U.S. Department of Labor's Working Partners for an Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace Program, the Week focused on educating employers, employees and the public about the importance of being drug-free as an essential component of a safe and healthful workplace.
  • June 1-3, 2009: American Automobile Association Conference, Rancho Mirage, California
    • Robert Stewart, Executive Vice Prescient, CCAR, staffed an exhibit booth and distributed copies of the Agency's Alliance Program and compliance assistance resources, including the OSHA and CCAR Alliance Activities Summary and a booklet focusing on single- and multi-piece rim wheels.

The theme for 2009 NAOSH Week was "Safety Means Always Coming Home."
  • April 18-20, 2009: American Truck Dealers National Convention, National Harbor, Maryland.
    • Robert Stewart, Executive Vice Prescient, CCAR, staffed an exhibit booth and distributed copies of the Agency's Alliance Program and compliance assistance resources, including the OSHA and CCAR Alliance Activities Summary and a booklet focusing on single and multi-piece rim wheels, to more than 100 people.
  • January 24-27, 2009: National Automobile Dealers Association Conference, New Orleans, Louisiana.
    • Robert Stewart, Executive Vice Prescient, CCAR, staffed an exhibit booth and distributed copies of the Agency's Alliance Program and compliance assistance resources, including the OSHA and CCAR Alliance Activities Summary and a booklet focusing on single- and multi-piece rim wheels, to more than 100 people.

Sponsored annually by the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering, the Week focuses on the importance of preventing injuries and illnesses in the workplace.
    • May 5, 2008: A representative of CCAR attended the NAOSH Week Kick-off event at the U.S. Department of Labor. Deputy Assistant Secretary Donald Shalhoub, USDOL-OSHA; and Michael Thompson, then-President, ASSE; were the keynote speakers. Mr. Shalhoub presented "Safety is Good Business" to OSHA and Alliance Program participants and other safety and health representatives.
  • October 2, 2008: American Trucking Association's Technology and Maintenance Council's (TMC) TMCSuperTech2008 Truck Competition, Nashville, Tennessee.
    • Natalie Schoonover, Manager, Environmental Safety, CCAR, staffed the "Safety and Environmental" work station at the TMCSuperTech2008 truck competition and distributed more than 50 copies of the OSHA publication focusing on personal protective equipment and the booklet focusing on single- and multi-piece rim wheels.

Alliance Program Participant Developed Products

  • Quick Card: Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-Powered Vehicles - Automotive Repair Industry. Through the OSHA and Coordinating Committee for Auto Repair (CCAR) Alliance, CCAR developed a Quick Card addressing issues associated with CNG-powered vehicles, including basic safety requirements before working on CNG vehicles. (2010, February)
  • Quick Card: Hexavalent Chromium - Automotive Collision Repair Industry. Through the OSHA and Coordinating Committee for Auto Repair (CCAR) Alliance, CCAR developed a Quick Card addressing issues associated with hexavalent chromium, including precautions that must be taken when refinishing motor vehicle parts. (2009, January) 
  • Operating Motor Vehicles: A Guide for Employees in the Automotive Repair Industry. Through the OSHA and Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair (CCAR) Alliance, CCAR developed a guide providing workers with information on safe driving and their responsibilities while driving a motor vehicle for their company.   • Asbestos-Automotive Brake and Clutch Repair Work. OSHA Safety and Health Information Bulletin. Informs employees and employers in the automotive brake repair industry of the precautions that must be taken when working with automotive brakes and clutches containing asbestos.
