Getting Products Verified as SmartWay

Technology Manufacturers: Verify Your Equipment as SmartWay

The Technology Verification Program evaluates the performance of vehicles, technologies and equipment that are intended to reduce greenhouse gases and other air pollutants when submitted by manufacturers. The verification process includes a thorough review of the technologies and/or strategies as well as test data from prescribed test protocols to establish credible performance and ensure efficiency improvement.

Considerations before applying for verification:

  • Manufacturer Representative: The applicant for verification must be a manufacturer representative with detailed knowledge of the technology, its manufacture, in-use operation, performance, durability and prior testing. The manufacturer representative is responsible for attesting to EPA that information is correct and that the technology will be manufactured, installed and perform as described.
  • Regulatory Requirements: Some technologies may not qualify for verification as the product may have regulatory requirements that supersede verification.
  • Availability: The technology submitted for verification must be commercially available for installation. No products still in the research and development stage will be verified.
  • Health Effects and Safety: Concerns with health effects or safety may need to be addressed prior to EPA review of a technology for verification.

Verification Process:

  1. Apply for Verification: This is a two-step verification process. To begin the verification process, manufacturers must first complete Part 1 of the application (5 pp, 567K, February 2012) and submit it to Tech_Center@epa.gov.
Part 1 of the application is used by EPA as an initial review of the verification request. If the technology or strategy falls under one of the categories listed below, EPA will follow up with Part 2 of the application requesting specific information for further review. The application forms outline the information required for verifying a technology or strategy. EPA has determined the following types of technologies provide fuel saving and/or emission reducing benefits when used properly in their designed applications for class 8 long-haul trucks:
        • Aerodynamics
        • Idle Reduction
        • Low Rolling Resistance Tires
  2. Application Acceptance: Once the manufacturer has submitted the two-part application and addressed the follow-up questions from EPA, the application will be accepted.
  3. Verification Test Protocols: A test protocol will be used for the specific technology for its intended applications. The testing protocols are listed as following:
  4. Testing: For aerodynamic and tires technologies, the manufacturer must follow the verification protocols provided above and submit the test results to EPA. For idle technologies, the manufacturer must submit product information and test results to EPA for review.
  5. Test Information and Results: Once testing is complete, test results must be sent to EPA in formats described by EPA. EPA will review the data to determine if the technology qualifies for verification.
  6. Notice of Verification Letter: Upon verification of the technology, the manufacturer will receive a Verification Letter. Sample Verification Letter (PDF) (2 pp, 458K, March 2012)
  7. Verified Technologies List: Once the technology has been verified, EPA will add it to the Verified Technologies List (Aerodynamic Technologies List, Idle Reduction Technologies, and Low Rolling Resistance Tires). The list describes the technology and other information contained in the Verification Letter so that potential customers may determine if they wish to purchase the technology. The SmartWay Verified Technologies Communication Guidelines provide information on communicating your organization's involvement in the U.S. EPA SmartWay Transport Partnership.
  8. Verified Technologies and Changes: Products sold as verified technologies must be produced and installed as described to EPA. If a manufacturer changes a verified technology or implements changes relative to information provided to EPA, the manufacturer must update the documentation with the Verification Program. If EPA determines the changes may impact performance or the changed technology may not be represented by the original verification, EPA may require further testing or conclude the changed product requires a separate verification.
