What is an RSS Feed or News Feed?

RSS (Real Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) feeds, also called news feeds, provide a method for web content providers to offer news headlines with links to the full article. Think of an RSS feed or news feed as an online newspaper, in which news headlines and the links to the full article are delivered to your computer desktop on a periodic basis. News feed subscriptions are a wonderful way to keep up with topics that interest you.
You can also receive Table of Contents notifications from many journals through RSS feeds. See the University of Wisconsin Ebling Library RSS journal feeds page as an example.
You can access the new headlines through a news reader. Readers are built into some browsers and e-mail programs, or are also available through online services or external software programs (see below). All of these methods will allow you to consolidate all of your news sources into one place. In addition to news feeds offered by web content providers, most blogs offer their content as RSS feeds.
Using E-Mail
Receiving individual articles from the news feed directly in your e-mail program is a convenient way to read news feeds. The free e-mail program Thunderbird allows you to do this. View instructions here. If you use another e-mail program, you can have the RSS feeds forwarded to your e-mail through a service like RSSFWD.
Using Your Browser
You can also read news directly in a browser. Internet Explorer Version 7 has a built-in news reader. If you use Firefox, you can use the Live Bookmarks feature; for more information about how to set up Live Bookmarks, see the Firefox site.
Another option is to use Google's Personalized home page, iGoogle. You can add any RSS feed URL to your page. Then all of your feeds will be available in one place when you log into your personal page.
