U.S. Rep. Karen Bass Statement on Black History Month

Feb 1, 2012

Washington, DC - U.S. Rep. Karen Bass made the following statement in recognition of February as Black History Month:

“Each February, as we recognize the accomplishments and achievements of African Americans in our country it is important that we also acknowledge the integral part black history plays in overall American history. The successes of African Americans have not always been recognized for its richness and complexity, but without a doubt, African Americans have played pivotal roles in the development of our nation and its path toward excellence.

“While our progress is great and we’ve reached milestones that our forefathers never imagined, we must continue to move forward to create a nation where the fight for social and economic justice is no longer necessary – and I’m confident it is possible. If every American from Capitol Hill to Main St. takes a moment and remembers the lessons and wisdom from the Civil Rights movement – working together for a common cause – we will be that much closer to truly making our country a place where liberty and justice prevails for all.”
