Electronic Funds Withdrawal and Credit or Debit Card Payment Options for Businesses

Who Can Participate?

 

  • Taxpayers who file electronically can e-file and e-pay in a single step by authorizing an electronic funds withdrawal (EFW) via tax preparation software or a tax professional.

  • Regardless of how the return is filed, taxpayers can pay by phone or Internet using a credit or debit card.

What Types of Business Taxes Can Be Paid Electronically?

 

The following types of balance due business taxes can be paid by electronic funds withdrawal and/or credit or debit card:

Form 940 series balance due return, Employer’s Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA) Tax Return

E-file Form 940/940-PR and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software or a tax professional. This payment option is available to users of the Employment Tax e-file System. E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 2002 and after).
Form 941 series balance due return, Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return E-file Form 941/941-PR/941-SS and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software or a tax professional. This payment option is available to users
of the Employment Tax e-file System.
E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider(Tax Year 2002 and after).
Form 943 balance due return, Employer's Annual Tax Return for Agricultural Employees Not applicable E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 2002 and after).
Form 944 balance due return, Employer's Annual Federal Tax Return E-file Form 944 and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software or a tax professional. This payment option is available to users of the Employment Tax e-file System. E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider
(Tax Year 2009 - 2011).
Form 945 balance due return, Annual Return of Withheld Federal Income Tax Not applicable E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 2002 and after).
Form 990-PF, Return of Private Foundation or Section 4947(a)(1) Nonexempt Charitable Trust Treated as a Private Foundation E-file Form 990-PF and simultaneously e-pay balance related to excise tax via tax preparation software or a tax professional. Not applicable
Form 1041, U. S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts E-file Form 1041 and simultaneously e-pay via tax preparation software or tax professional. This payment option is available to users of 1041 e-file. E-pay balance due by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 2002 and after).
Form 1065, U.S. Return of Partnership Income, and Form 1065-B, U.S. Return of Income for Electing Large Partnerships E-file and simultaneously e-pay penalties due on Form 1065 or the balance due on Form 1065-B via tax preparation software or a tax professional. E-pay penalties due on Form 1065 by phone or Internet through a service provider (Tax Year 2002 and after).

  • All electronic funds withdrawal and credit or debit card payments must be at least $1. All credit and debit card payments must be made in dollars and cents. For EFW, employment tax form and excise tax form payments must be made in dollar and cents. Other EFW payments must be made in whole dollars (round to the nearest whole dollar).

  • Making an electronic payment eliminates the need to submit an associated payment voucher.

  • Card payment service providers charge a fee for their service.  This fee can be deducted as a business expense, when paid or incurred by the business.

  • Federal tax deposits cannot be made using the credit or debit card payment option

 


When Can Electronic Funds Withdrawal and Credit or Debit Card Payments Be Made?


  • For business taxes paid via credit or debit card, the option is available year round.

  • Generally, for business taxes paid via EFW, the option is only available at the time the electronic return is filed.  However, for Form(s) 944 series, 990-PF, 1065, 1120, 1120S and 1120POL an EFW payment can be scheduled in advance, up to the due date of the return.
