Congressman Ed Towns Says ‘No More Drama, Pass the Tax Cut’

Jan 31, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC: Citing a newly-released report by the United States Congress Joint Economic Committee, Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns (D-NY10) today joined his Democratic colleagues in urging swift action on extending the two percent payroll tax.  “We need to put politics aside and get this legislation to the President without delay,” Rep. Towns stated emphatically.  “Extending the payroll tax cut through the remainder of the year would add more than $1,000 to the budgets of Brooklyn families with two wage earners.  For some, that means being able to get the car repaired or the roof repaired which provides work for small businesses.”

At the end of 2011, Congress passed a two-month extension of the payroll tax cut that would last through the month of February.  The tax cut lowered the rate at which wages are taxed to fund Social Security from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.  “The last thing we need is more drama in Congress,” Rep. Towns stated. “Hard-working people all over this country desperately need us to extend this tax cut and it will help boost the economy.”
