Highlights

The daily spot price for West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil at Cushing, Oklahoma was on the increase during July. Opening at $85.04 per barrel, the price dropped immediately to the month's low of $83.72 per barrel, pressured by reported declines in manufacturing activity in both the United States and international markets. A number of issues including geopolitical events, international oil production operations, and unfavorable economic news contributed to the change in the price's direction during the following days. More specifically, robust refinery utilization and concern about supply from key North Sea streams in August contributed to a steady increase in the price's level. International political tensions and supportive economic news led the price to the month's high of $92.78 per barrel on July 19. Renewed worries about the stability of some eurozone economies and a reported increase in crude oil inventories dampened the price after that point. Closing the month at $88.08 per barrel, the price was $3.04 higher than its opening level for July. Averaging $87.90 per barrel for the month, the price was $5.60 (6.8 percent) higher than June's average price of $82.30 per barrel. In contrast, the current average price is $9.40 (9.7 percent) below the July 2011 price of $97.30 per barrel. ...
