  • Congresswoman Anna Eshoo: As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, it is fitting to recognize a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) serving members of the Latino community in California's 14th Congressional District. For over 160 years, Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) has helped thousands of students from around the world and here at home achieve higher learning. NDNU is one of only two private, nonprofit four-year institutions of higher learning in Northern California to be recognized by the federal government as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, and the only one in San Mateo County. In 2011, NDNU was awarded two HSI grants totaling $6 million from the Department of Education—one to help increase retention and success of Hispanic and low-income students, and one to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students earning degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Please join me in sharing your recognition or stories about your experience with this first rate institution. 3 weeks ago

Rep. Eshoo heard from students about their views on civil liberties at the Santa Clara and San Mateo Student Advisory Board presentation. Rep. Eshoo launched the 14th Congressional District Student Advisory Board in 1993 to give young people a voice in public policy and government. Every year, students select a topic on which to focus and prepare a set of public policy recommendations for the Congresswoman.

  • Congresswoman Anna Eshoo: Join me in saluting local Latino community leader and East Palo Alto Mayor Laura Martinez this month for Hispanic Heritage Month. Mayor Martinez was elected in 2008. She is a 27-year resident of East Palo Alto and has over 10 years of experience working with the community’s youth and families. She was selected by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal as one of the top 100 Women of Influence for 2012. She is the youngest council member to be elected to the East Palo Alto City Council and is one of the youngest mayors in the country. Bravo, Laura! 3 weeks ago

  • Congresswoman Anna Eshoo: Last night, the House passed my bill to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancers with high mortality rates, such as pancreatic cancer. The Pancreatic Cancer Research and Education Act (H.R. 733) directs the National Cancer Institute to develop a long-term strategic plan for addressing "recalcitrant cancers," or those with a high mortality rate and few treatment options. With 293 bipartisan cosponsors, I'm exceedingly proud of the pancreatic cancer advocates in my District and around the country who have helped to make this bill a reality. 3 weeks ago
