NRC, UTILITY TO DISCUSS SHIPMENT OF HADDAM NECK REACTOR VESSEL
Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with representatives of the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Electric Company on Wednesday, September 2, to discuss the eventual shipment of the reactor vessel from the Haddam Neck nuclear power plant, which is undergoing decommissioning. Located in Haddam, Conn., the plant was permanently shut down in December 1996.
The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. in Room 6-B-11 at NRC Headquarters, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md. It will be open to the public for observation.
Connecticut Yankee is exercising the DECON option for the decommissioning of Haddam Neck, a pressurized-water reactor that began operating in 1968. DECON is the alternative in which the equipment, structures and portions of the facility and site containing radioactive contaminants are removed or decontaminated to a level that permits the property to be released for unrestricted use shortly after operations cease.
Once the reactor vessel's highly radioactive internal components have been removed, it will be shipped it to a landfill that accepts low-level radioactive waste. The September 2 meeting will be a preliminary discussion regarding vessel transport plans.
The decontamination and removal of all structures and systems, except the spent fuel storage building, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2002.
