ANNOTATION: “This BOP Clinical Practice Guideline provides specific recommendations for medically managing exposures to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human bites, and sexual assaults (p.1).” Steps in post-exposure management include: evaluate the exposure; evaluate the source case; evaluate the health status of the exposed person; determine need for HIV PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis); determine need for hepatitis B PEP; determine need for hepatitis C post-exposure follow-up; determine need for tetanus vaccine; determine need for antibiotic prophylaxis (for human bites only); conduct screening for STDs (sexual exposures only); provide counseling, education, and referral; and complete reporting and documentation.
