John M. Koenig was confirmed as Ambassador to the Republic of Cyprus on August 2, 2012 and sworn-in on August 17, 2012.
A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, Ambassador Koenig previously served as Political Advisor to the Commander of the Allied Joint Force Command in Naples from August 2009 to May 2012. From 2006 to 2009, he served as Charge d’Affaires ad interim and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin. From 2003 to 2006, Ambassador Koenig was Deputy Permanent Representative and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission to NATO. From 2000 to 2003, he was Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Thessaloniki, Greece. Other overseas assignments include posts at the U.S. Embassies in Athens, Nicosia, Jakarta, and Manila. In Washington, he has served in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs and the Operations Center. Ambassador Koenig received a B.A. from the University of Washington and an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.
