Christopher J. McMullen was confirmed on September 30, 2010, as the United States Ambassador to Angola. Ambassador McMullen was nominated by the President on July 21, 2010 and attested by the President on October 1, 2010. Ambassador McMullen arrived at post during the month of October.

He recently served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of State's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, he was consul general in São Paulo, Brazil. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Panama. In addition to several Washington assignments, he served as a political officer in Nicaragua, Malaysia, El Salvador, Tanzania, and Colombia.

Prior to entering the Foreign Service, Ambassador McMullen was a senior analyst at the Pentagon and worked as a Foreign Affairs Fellow in the Office of Senator John Glenn. He also taught Latin American history at Georgetown University and George Mason University.

Ambassador McMullen earned a Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University, and is a distinguished graduate of the National War College.
