On Monday, November 21, 2011, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Melanne Verveer will host a panel to observe the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) in the Loy Henderson Auditorium from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each year, the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues raises awareness and highlights gender-based violence by organizing events around IDEVAW. This year, the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues is commemorating IDEVAW by bringing together a panel of experts to speak on the often overlooked consequences of violence against women and girls, including the economic, health, legal and social costs.
The official IDEVAW on November 25 marks the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which ends on December 10. December 10th is International Human Rights Day, an important day in which the international community reiterates its commitment to the principle that violence against women is a violation of human rights.
The event will be open to credentialed members of the media.
Pre-set time for video cameras: 1:30 p.m. from the 23rd Street entrance
Final access time for journalists and still photographers: 1:45 p.m. from the 23rd Street entrance
Media representatives may attend the opening session upon presentation of one of the following: 1) a U.S. Government-issued photo identification (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
