THREE REGION 4 SITES ADDED TO THE NPL AND ONE PROPOSED
On September 18 2012, three hazardous waste sites located in Region 4 will be added to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). Additionally, one other site is being proposed for addition. The sites added include: Alabama Plating, Vincent, AL.; Fairfax Street Wood Preserving, Jacksonville, FL; and Holcomb Creosote, Yadkinville, NC. The site being proposed is, Clinch River, Harriman, TN.
ADDITIONAL CLEANUP PROPOSED FOR THE VELSICOL HARDEMAN COUNTY LANDFILL SITE
On Tuesday July 31, 2012, EPA will host a public meeting to present the options considered and the preferred remedy for further cleanup of Operable Unit 2 of the Velsicol Chemical Corporation Site in Toone Tennessee. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting which will be held from 7:00 p.m. till 9 p.m., at the Toone Town Hall at 2005 Highway 138. A 30-day public comment period lasting from July 11, 2012 to August 10, 2012 has been opened for community members to express their views and concerns about the proposed plan. Before selecting a cleanup plan, EPA will consider oral and written comments submitted by the public. For more information contact John Nolen, the Remedial Project Manager for the site.
EXCELLENCE IN REUSE AWARDS PRESENTED
On May 7, 2012, EPA presented the Superfund Excellence in Site Re-use Award to Lexington County, South Carolina and their partners for redeveloping the 160-acre Lexington County Landfill Site in a manner that resulted in the development of a valuable resource for the surrounding community and the County as a whole. Today the site includes a mini-golf course, a driving range, a practice golf course, a ballpark and a recycling center.On April 12, 2012, EPA recognized the City of Camilla, Georgia for their efforts in supporting cleanup and re-developing the Camilla Wood Preserving Site in a manner that enhanced EPA’s selected remedy and resulted in the revitalization of the property and the surrounding community. The City of Camilla has opened a community park with soccer fields and a small RV park. The Mitchell County Parks and Recreation Department operates the community park and plans to expand the sports complex on the eastern half of the site following future cleanup.
