Sacramento-based Sutter Health is used to having its hospitals make the Modern Healthcare journal's "100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare" list, but officials were pleasantly surprised when the Sutter Center for Psychiatry made this year's rankings.
"We were the only psychiatric facility on the list … Being recognized for the complex work done every day is especially rewarding," said John Boyd, chief administrative officer of mental health services for Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region.
Also making the 2012 list was Sutter Davis Hospital, which has cracked the top 100 in previous years.
Now in its fifth year, the Modern Healthcare program recognizes U.S. health care workplaces that foster employee excellence, quality care and top-level products and services. Besides hospitals, eligible facilities include suppliers, payers and associations.
Rankings, derived primarily from surveys obtained from randomly selected employees, measure factors that include work culture, training, benefits and overall satisfaction.
The program is co-sponsored by the Studer Group. A banquet recognizing the top 100 will be Oct. 9 in Nashville, Tenn.
The two Sutter facilities were among only six in California to make the list. The other four were in San Francisco (Practice Fusion and Triage Consulting Group), Walnut Creek and Thousand Oaks.
The Sutter Center for Psychiatry has a 69-bed inpatient hospital for children and adults at 7700 Folsom Blvd. and an outpatient center at 855 Howe Ave., both in Sacramento.
Boyd said officials have stressed a quality environment at both sites.
"First and foremost, it really does take a culture in which each employee is treated with complete dignity and respect … where they're engaged in daily decision-making and know how their work has contributed to our mission."
Sutter Davis Hospital is a 48-bed facility providing care to residents of Davis, Dixon, Winters, Woodland, West Sacramento, Vacaville and rural communities throughout Yolo and Solano counties.
"Our focus at Sutter Davis Hospital is the quality care we provide our patients, and to be able to do that in an environment where we care about each other is what makes our hospital one of the best places to work," said hospital CEO Janet Wagner.
