2006 National DNA Day Online Chatroom Transcript

This is just one question from an archive of the National DNA Day Moderated Chat held in April 2006. The NHGRI Director and many genomics experts from across NHGRI took questions from students, teachers and the general public on topics ranging from basic genomic research, to the genetic basis of disease, to ethical questions about genetic privacy.

What year was DNA discovered?
Carla Easter, Ph.D.: Many people and experiments led to the discovery of DNA. In the 1800's, Gregor Mendel working with pea plants discovered the principles of inheritance. The discovery that DNA was the genetic material of an organism was discovered in the 1940s. Oswald Avery and his co-workers discovered that DNA was the "transforming principle" or the molecule that caused a bacteria to acquire new traits. These experiments led ot the discover that the genetic material of a cell was found in the DNA. The physical structure of DNA was discovered in 1953 by James Watson, Francis Crick, and Rosalind Franklin.
