2006 National DNA Day Online Chatroom Transcript

This is just one question from an archive of the National DNA Day Moderated Chat held in April 2006. The NHGRI Director and many genomics experts from across NHGRI took questions from students, teachers and the general public on topics ranging from basic genomic research, to the genetic basis of disease, to ethical questions about genetic privacy.

Is there any correlation between mutations in DNA and being gay?
Vivian Ota Wang, Ph.D.: Behaviors are due to a number of genes and environmental factors interacting with each other, many of which have not been discovered yet or clearly described. Your question falls into this category. While some studies have begun identifying some gene changes associated with sexual orientation, it is too early to draw any conclusions from these preliminary studies.
