Parent's Page

We love to watch our children grow. From infancy on, we marvel at how quickly they learn, and change and develop. To help parents (and grandparents) watch their children grow, we have developed the Early LAP for children birth to age three and the LAP-3 for children three through five. There are other products as well that will help enhance your role as parent.

The Early LAP

The Early LAP is an observational assessment that is used with children who are very young (0-3). It provides information about your child's development during his or her critical early years. The Early LAP contains a hierarchy of 414 developmental skills arranged in chronological sequence in six domains of development:

  • Gross Motor (rolls over, sits, crawls, walks, etc)
  • Fine Motor (grasp finger, reaches, picks up spoon, etc)
  • Cognition (responds to voice, looks for toy, shakes head "no.")
  • Language (babbles, laughs, responds to verbal request.)
  • Self-help (lifts cup, chews food, unwraps candy, puts on shoes.)
  • Social-emotional (discriminates strangers, expresses protest, etc)

The Early LAP is used by educators to determine child development, the effectiveness of intervention programs and developmentally appropriate learning activities. We suggest that parents will find it useful for three very important reasons:

  1. It will help you to understand normal child development so that you can make more realistic the expectations you have for your own child's growth and development.
  2. It will help you to purchase toys and other educational materials that are appropriate to the child's level of development, and
  3. If you notice that your child is lagging in any of these developmental domains, there is a better chance of correcting the lag now then waiting until he or she is school age.

The Early-LAP (124 pages, spiral binding) is available for $19.95.Click here to order.

The LAP-3

The LAP-3 is an observational assessment that is used with children who are age three and four. It provides information about your child's development during his or her preschool years. The LAP-3 contains a hierarchy of 383 developmental skills arranged in chronological sequence in seven domains of development:The LAP-3 is used by educators to determine child progress, the effectiveness of preschool programs and developmentally appropriate learning activities. We suggest that parents will find it useful for these very important reasons:

  • Gross Motor (walks, stands, jumps, kicks ball, etc)
  • Fine Motor (builds block tower, strings beads, ties knot, etc).
  • Pre-Writing (marks with pencil, finger paints, prints name, etc)
  • Cognitive (completes puzzle, discriminates big, little, names colors, counts objects, etc)
  • Language (names objects, speaks 3-word sentence, discriminates letters, tells use of objects, etc)
  • Self-Help (shows soiled pants, puts on coat, pours from pitcher, laces shoes, combs hair, etc)
  • Personal/Social (refers to self by name, tells age, assists others, plays games, works in small group, etc)

PANDA for Substance Abuse Prevention

PANDA is a substance abuse prevention program developed for use in earlychildhood settings. It includes a wide variety of developmentally-appropriate activities for children aged four and older. Designed to teach young children about the importance of building healthy bodies and saying "no" to substances that can hurt them, the curriculum helps children develop positive feelings about themselves, and gives them practice in making appropriate decisions in the face of peer pressure. Check review links on the right.

PANDA is based on the conviction that children can have an ongoing impact on their own health and safety if they are actively educated. The curriculum features four units:

  • Building Healthy Bodies;
  • Saying No to Tobacco;
  • Saying No to Alcohol; and,
  • Saying No to Drugs.

PANDA includes materials and guidelines for involving families, teachers, administrators and other segments of the child's community. Through teamwork, coordinators of education, parent involvement and social services, PANDA can help early intervention programs help children and families say "yes" to a lifetime of good health.
