BLM Schedules Public Meeting on Resource Damage

The Bureau of Land Management’s Bishop Field Office will hold a public meeting in October to discuss options to prevent resource damage in the Volcanic Tableland. The Meeting will be held Saturday, October 27, at 9 a.m. in the Tableland. Participants should meet at the kiosk at the intersection of Chalk Bluff and Fish Slough Road to car pool from there to the site location.

The BLM has implemented an emergency road closure along a portion of Roadside Boulders Road, a dead-end road, to ensure no further resource damage occurs. The area remains open to foot traffic.

“We have had graffiti and other resource damage in the area,” said Bernadette Lovato, Bishop Field Office manager. “The Tableland has sensitive resources, including cultural resources, and we need to take measures to protect them. We have discussed the issue with the local tribal members and have agreed to close a primitive route. We would like to hear from the public what we might do to protect the resources while still allowing access for people to enjoy their public lands.”

The meeting will be held Saturday, Oct 27, at 9 a.m.  in the Tableland. Participants should meet at the kiosk at the intersection of Chalk Bluff and Fish Slough Road to car pool from there to the site location.

To get to the intersection of Chalk Bluff and Fish Slough Road location, go north on Highway 6 out of Bishop to Five Bridges Road, then go north on Five Bridges to Jean Blanc Road and west to Chalk Bluff. The kiosk is on the northwest side of the intersection. There will be some hiking to the site, possible a mile, so bring sturdy shoes, water, a hat and sunscreen.
