ANNOTATION: The beliefs of correctional officers that offenders will not recidivate and will find employment upon release from incarceration are examined. A similar study would show how the correctional officers in your agency view offenders. This allows you to address comparable perceptions before they become widespread and negatively impact operational efficiency. Respondent perceptions regarding a hypothetical offender’s likelihood to recidivate, rehabilitate, find a job, and find steady employment were evaluated. “Our results suggest that while importation and institutional dynamics are relevant, offender characteristics are also central to the evaluations that professionals make of offenders” (p. 10). Respondents are not overly optimistic that offenders will not recidivate following release.
