About This Project

This site is the “virtual home” of a project organized by OpenTheGovernment.org to evaluate federal agency’s progress towards fulfilling President Obama’s commitment to "creating an unprecedented level of openness in Government" in order to "strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in Government." The contributors to this project launched this effort by conducting an audit of the Open Government Plans agencies were required to develop under the Open Government Directive. The agencies had 120 calendar days to complete and submit the plans, with the deadline of April 7, 2010.

This audit is only the first stage of this project. We will be evaluating how agencies are doing to improve, and – more importantly – to implement these plans at various times over the next year. We and the agencies are at the beginning of a process to make government more open, participatory, and collaborative. In the final analysis, an open government plan is really only as strong as its execution, and much work is left to do. We look forward to working with the agencies to help them live up to the promises these plans represent.

OpenTheGovernment.org recruited partners for this project, from non-profits and academia with experience working with agencies and evaluating information policies, to evaluate agencies' Open Government Plans. Learn more about our partners below:
