ATSDR ToxFAQs: Hazardous Substance Fact Sheets Summaries about hazardous substances being developed by the ATSDR Division of Toxicology. Information for this series is excerpted from the ATSDR Toxicological Profiles and Public Health Statements. Answers are provided to the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) about exposure to hazardous substances found around hazardous waste sites and the effects of exposure on human health.
CAL EPA California Environmental Protection Agency (CAL EPA) has a risk assessment branch similar in scope to that of US EPA's IRIS program.
Department of the Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Environmental Contaminants Program Specialists detect toxic chemicals, address their effects, prevent harm to fish, wildlife and their habitats, remove toxic chemicals and restore habitat when prevention isn't possible.
National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NIOSH is responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related disease and injury.
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Part of Dept of Health and Human Services and NIH, NIEHS conducts multidisciplinary biomedical research programs, and provides information for prevention and intervention efforts. Publishes monthly journal of peer-reviewed research and news on the impact of the environment on human health, Environmental Health Perspectives. National Toxicology Program (NTP) The NTP is an interagency program that conducts toxicology testing to evaluate agents of public health concern.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Part of the US Department of Labor, OSHA's mission is to assure the safety and health of America’s workers by setting and enforcing standards to prevent work-related injuries, illnesses and deaths.  Provides an alphabetical listing of links to specific workplace hazards and links to compliance, laws and regulations, and enforcement.
US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Responsible for protecting public health by assuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation’s food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation. Provides up-to-date studies, regulations, and health risk information pertaining to food and drugs for human consumption.
Non-Profit, Non-Governmental Agencies
The National Academies of Science (NAS) This non-profit organization serves as an expert, non-partisan advisor to the U.S. government and public on scientific issues. The National Research Council (NRC) is the principal operating agency of the NAS.  The NAS has a standing toxicology board, and within it, several committees devoted to toxicology issues, including the NAS Standing Committee on Risk Analysis Issues and Reviews within the Division of Earth and Life Studies (DELS).
International Agencies
International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) Rapid access to internationally peer-reviewed information on chemicals.
IARC monographs The International Agency for Research on Cancer publishes IARC monographs, which identify environmental factors (chemicals, chemical mixtures, occupational exposures, physical and biological agents, and lifesyle factors) that can increase the risk of cancer.
United Nations Environmental Programme Chemicals' Programme (IRPTC) UNEP works to protect public health and the environment world-wide.  The Chemicals’ Programme is the focus for all UNEP activities and serves as the catalysts for the concerted global action on the environmentally sound management of hazardous chemicals
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR)  A world-wide information network for safe use of chemicals based on information provided by both international organizations and national institutions. English and Japanese versions available.
World Health Organization (WHO) The directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system.  Responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.  WHO has a stake in toxicology issues internationally.
