Standards for Coordinate Metrology Instruments

Standardized specifications and testing procedures for metrology instruments facilitate commence and reduce costs for both buyer and seller. The Dimensional Metrology Group (683.01) is actively involved on the ASME B89.4 and ISO TC213 WG10 committees on coordinate metrology instruments. The following U.S. documents are available at www.asme.org.

ASME B89.4.10360.2-2008, Acceptance Test and Reverification Test for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) - Part 2: CMMs Used for Measuring Linear Dimensions ASME B89.4.10360.2-2008, Acceptance Test and Reverification Test for Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) — Part 2: CMMs Used for Measuring Linear Dimensions — is the long awaited replacement for ASME B89.4.1. This document contains the revision to the ISO 10360-2 standard (due to be released in 2009) and hence finally makes the US consistent with ISO CMM standards. Part 2 address the CMM machine frame performance; soon to be released are the corresponding parts of the B89.10360 series that address subsystems, e.g. CMM probing tests. The B89.4.10360.2 document includes not only the revised ISO 10360-2 standard but also portions of ISO 10360-1 needed to create the CMM specification sheet and the information in ISO 23165 Guidelines for Coordinate Measuring Machine Test Uncertainty needed to evaluate measurement "test uncertainty." Hence, B89.4.10360.2 contains all the necessary information to perform CMM testing in a single document.
ASME B89.4.19-2006, Performance Evaluation of Laser-Based Spherical Coordinate Measurement Systems ASME B89.4.19-2006, Performance Evaluation of Laser-Based Spherical Coordinate Measurement Systems — is the world’s first standard for laser trackers and similar systems. The document contains all the information necessary to specify and test the performance of laser trackers plus tutorial information to understand the uncertainty sources of these instruments.
ASME B89.4.22-2004, Methods for Performance Evaluation of Articulated Arm Coordinate Measuring Machines ASME B89.4.22-2004, Methods for Performance Evaluation of Articulated Arm Coordinate Measuring Machines — addresses specifications and testing of this class of multi-joint articulated CMM instruments.
ASME B89.4.10-2000, Methods for Performance Evaluation of Coordinate Measuring System Software ASME B89.4.10-2000, Methods for Performance Evaluation of Coordinate Measuring System Software — provides the specification for testing basic least squares fitting algorithms for CMM software. The LSCM group provides a calibration service based on this standard.
