Biographical Sketch
Richard Gerber is a High Performance consultant in NERSC's User Services Group. In addition to helping scientists use NERSC's high performance computing and storage resources, Richard is the NERSC Lead for Training, Web, and User Outreach. These duties include overseeing and contributing to the NERSC web site, coordinating NERSC's training efforts, managing NERSC's trouble ticket system, and designing and conducting NERSC's annual user survey. Richard is keenly interested in automatic collection of HPC performance and runtime data and making it available on the web to help users monitor, debug, and optimize their applications.
Richard is an expert in understanding broad science communities' needs for high performance computing, storage, and services. He and Harvey Wasserman coordinate and facilitate the HPC Requirements Reviews for Production Computing run by NERSC, the DOE Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and the DOE Office of Science program offices.
Richard has a Ph.D. in physics, specializing in computational astrophysics, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and completed a National Research Council postdoctoral fellowship at NASA Ames Research Center. His specialty is N-body and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics of colliding galaxies, "ring" galaxies in particular. He also has an interest in N-body realizations of equilibrium galaxies and validation of computational simulations.
