ANNOTATION: Sometimes a look at the system from outside sheds new light on elements that can contribute to its success. That is one of the benefits of reading this article. “The purpose of this paper is to critically examine how well the field is positioned to meet proffered expectations for re-entry regarding risk reduction and public safety and to debate whether existing conceptualizations of offender change can adequately inform offender re-entry initiatives” (p. 53). Sections of this publication after an abstract include: context—reentry in the United States; what we know—risk assessment, criminogenic needs, correctional interventions, offender change, probation, aftercare, and summary; transition model of re-entry—description of the model, risk factors, commitment to change, internal change factors, external change factors, desistance correlates; and final thoughts.
