Pelosi Statement on the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge

May 25, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today to mark the 75th anniversary of the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge, which falls on Sunday.  The bridge first opened on May 27, 1937:

“On this anniversary, the people of San Francisco celebrate a stunning feat of engineering excellence, architectural design, and technological mastery.  For 75 years, the Golden Gate Bridge has stood as a tribute to the innovative spirit of our city, a symbol of hope for immigrants arriving on our shores, a landmark welcoming home service members from abroad, and a gateway to the promise of the American dream.

“Built in the midst of the Great Depression, this bridge is a reminder that, no matter how daunting the challenge, America has always invested in big things and bold endeavors.  Despite doubts about the wisdom of this project, San Franciscans, engineer Joseph Strauss, and architect Irving Morrow defied the odds, stayed the course, and achieved the seemingly impossible.  Seventy-five years later, the bridge stands as a proud sign of the courage and vision of our city and its residents.

“Over my 25 years in Congress, it is has been a point of personal privilege to work with so many local leaders to upgrade and improve the Golden Gate Bridge, ensuring it remains an iconic image of our city.  Today, on its 75th anniversary, the bridge remains a faithful companion for San Franciscans, a source of pride for California, and a national treasure for all Americans.  Together, we will celebrate this landmark now and for generations to come.”
