Pelosi Statement on Affordable Care Act Grant of $32 Million to California to Strengthen Health Care Workforce

September 28, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today after Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius announced $320 million in grants under the Affordable Care Act to strengthen the health care workforce.  As part of these investments, California will receive more than $32 million to expand the state’s primary care workforce and help low-income individuals advance in careers in the health care sector:

“One of the top goals of health reform was to preserve access to the doctor of your choice and a whole team of skilled medical professionals.  Strengthening our health workforce is one way we keep that promise.  Across California and nationwide, nurses, doctors, and health care professionals work each day to keep our families healthy.  Their work is vital to preventing disease, treating chronic illnesses, and promoting healthy living.  And an investment in this workforce is an investment in the well-being of our communities.

“With more than $32 million in grants, California will continue to lead the nation in strengthening the role of prevention and wellness in our hospitals, clinics, and primary care facilities.  At places like UC San Francisco and the Tides Center Women’s Community Clinic, this funding will help improve our primary care workforce and expand residency training initiatives in pediatrics and family medicine.  It will empower nurses serving underserved and vulnerable populations.  And it will give us the resources to start educating and preparing the next generation of health care professionals.

“In awarding these grants today, we are supporting the men and women on the frontlines of medical care in California and around the country.”
