Pelosi: Passage of Transportation-HUD Appropriations Bill an Investment in America’s Economic Recovery

July 29, 2010

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement late tonight after the House passed H.R. 5850, the fiscal 2011 Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill.  The bill creates jobs and bolsters the economic recovery by making key investments in transportation and housing infrastructure.  The bill passed by a vote of 251 to 167.

“Tonight the House made an investment in America’s economic recovery, helping to create more than 160,000 new jobs with passage of the Transportation-HUD Appropriations bill.  This legislation also provides housing aid to millions of Americans in a time of great need, and invests in the safety and efficiency of air travel for our nation.

“As responsible stewards of the taxpayer dollar, we have ensured that this legislation invests in the areas that will create the most jobs and will help build the infrastructure of the future.  And keeping with the commitment of the New Direction Congress to fiscal responsibility, this legislation is more than $1 billion below President Obama’s request.

“Today we are putting Americans back to work, particularly in the hard-hit construction sector, and in so doing, we are strengthening our nation.”
