Pelosi Statement on Congresswoman Julia Carson’s Decision Not to Seek Re-Election

November 26, 2007

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement today on Congresswoman Julia Carson of Indiana, who announced today that she would not seek re-election next year:

"Julia Carson has served the people of Indiana with great distinction and will be deeply missed by all of us in Congress.  She will long be remembered as a bipartisan leader who fought for social and economic justice on behalf of those too often left behind in society.  She never forgot the struggles of working families throughout her long public service.

"Among Congresswoman Carson’s proudest accomplishments was her successful effort to honor the late Rosa Parks with the Congressional Gold Medal.  It took many years to achieve her mission, but Julia Carson's persistence ensured that Congress finally honored the courage and sacrifice of one of America's civil rights pioneers.

"On behalf of all my colleagues, I thank Congresswoman Carson for her decade of service in the House.  Her passion and eloquence will be missed on Capitol Hill.  My thoughts and prayers are with Julia and her family in this difficult time."
