Washington,
D.C. – Today the House approved
H.R. 3121, the Flood Insurance Reform and Modernization Act, by a vote of
263-146. The bill provides overdue and much-needed reforms to the National
Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and updates the program to meet the needs of the
21st century. It also includes a
provision authored by Congressman Gene Taylor of Mississippi to responsibly expand the Flood
Insurance Program to provide for an optional multiple peril policy – to allow
property owners to purchase wind and flood coverage in a single policy.
“Last August, I traveled to the Gulf Coast
and heard stories of devastation and destruction followed by failure to fairly
compensate families who lost their homes as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Today’s House passage of Congressman Taylor’s
provision addresses a major obstacle to the region’s recovery and is a huge
step toward ensuring that families are not left behind in the wake of future
disasters.
“The Democratic Congress is honoring its promises for a New
Direction for the Gulf
Coast, and establishing a
partnership for the future as residents continue to rebuild.”
