Pelosi Statement on Lunar New Year

February 16, 2007

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in commemoration of the Lunar New Year, which begins this Sunday, February 18:

“This Sunday marks the start of the Lunar New Year for Asians and Asian Americans all over the world.  As we usher in the Year of the Boar, we must remember that valuing holidays such as this is what highlights the beauty of our country as a nation of diverse cultures.

“As we celebrate the Lunar New Year, we should also take pause to reflect on the rich history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and their contributions to our nation.

“I am proud to represent the 8th district of San Francisco – home to AAPIs who are the backbone of this city.  Though diverse in ethnicity and background, we look to this community in particular for what we value in America – hard work and a strong sense of family.  Their contributions to American culture strengthen our moral fabric.

“The support of San Francisco’s booming AAPI population throughout the years has been remarkable, and working together we will take America in a new direction for all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.”
