JONES TO SUPERCOMMITTEE: NO MORE DEFENSE CUTS

Oct 28, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) is urging the powerful congressional “Supercommittee” to refrain from any further cuts to national defense.  The bipartisan “Supercommittee” was established by the Budget Control Act of 2011 and is required to craft a plan to reduce the federal deficit by at least $1.5 trillion over ten years.  Jones and fellow members of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC) sent a letter to the Supercommittee saying that additional reductions in the base budget of the Department of Defense (DoD) will compound deep reductions Congress already imposed earlier this year, and could compromise national security.

“DoD has already done their part to reduce our nation’s fiscal deficit and continuing to make cuts will do nothing but pose a serious threat to our national security and put added strain on our Armed Forces.  A line must be drawn,” said Jones and his HASC colleagues.

In addition to opposing additional defense cuts, the letter urged the Supercommittee not to make any changes to military retirement and TRICARE.  Jones and the other HASC members want the promises that America has made to service members to be kept.
