Orbach Cites "21st Century Challenges,"
Domenici Criticizes Flat Funding
in Senate's FY05 Budget Hearing
|
Dr. Raymond Orbach |
Dr. Raymond Orbach, Director of the Department of Energy's Office of Science, on Thursday told the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water that the $3.4 billion budget request for FY05 "will set us on the path toward addressing the challenges that face our nation in the 21st Century," though the package for the Office of Science represents a $68.5 million decrease from the FY 2004 appropriation levels.
Chairman Pete Domenici (R-NM) opened the hearing by expressing his disappointment in flat funding for basic science research at DOE, which has, according to the chairman, "not kept pace with funding at the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation." Ranking Member Harry Reid (D-NV) concurred with the Chairman in his opening remarks, adding his specific disappointment in the decreased funding request for the Office Science. Reid also said decreased funding in research only stands to hurt the U.S. in the long run.

From the House Committee on Science, March 4, 2004
Committee Offers Views and Recommendations on Annual Budget
WASHINGTON, March 4, 2004 - Today, the House Science Committee publicly released its recommendations, or "Views and Estimates," on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2005 budget.
"As the House and Senate begin consideration of the President's FY05 budget request, there is no question that a great deal of debate will revolve around the budget deficit and its impact on the long-term economic health of the Nation," said the Committee. "As these discussions move forward, the Science Committee urges Congress to recognize the importance and contributions of science and technology to productivity and economic growth-and consequently-fiscal security. Indeed, nothing benefits federal revenues over the long-term as much as accelerated economic growth, and nothing fuels long-term growth more than science and technology."

It's a Twister!

A tornado is a
violent, rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. |
Every year, an average of 31 tornadoes occur in Illinois, and the
majority of them occur in the spring. Most tornadoes produce winds
that range from 60 to 112 mph, but the most violent storms can produce
winds up to 318 mph. Last Tuesday, during Illinois' Severe Weather
Awareness Week, Fermilab's ES&H section conducted its annual tornado
drill to test the tornado sirens and site wide emergency alert system.
Annual drills serve as reminders to review tornado safety.
If the National Weather Service issues a Tornado Watch, tornadoes are possible.
Watch the sky and listen to the radio or television for more information. Be prepared to take shelter. If you see any rotating funnel-shaped clouds, report them immediately by telephone to your local law enforcement agency. A Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Take shelter immediately. Turn on a battery-operated radio or television and wait for the "all clear" announcement by authorities.
If you are outdoors when any watches or warnings are issued, get inside a substantial building immediately. If shelter is not available, or if there is no time to get indoors, lie in a ditch or crouch near a strong building. If you are in a vehicle, try to take shelter immediately in a nearby building. Never try to outrun a tornado in a vehicle. If there isn't time to get indoors, get out of the vehicle and lie in a ditch that is away from the vehicle.
Contact your warden to find out which tornado shelter at Fermilab is closest to you.
Have a great day and let's work safely all week!
